Several young professionals from the Jewish community recently met with up-and-coming legislative leader Rep. Stephen Webber (D-Columbia) to discuss the importance of raising the bar in political engagement. This is the first in a series of discussions hosted by Good Government for Missouri focused on helping young professionals find a voice in the policy process. [endif]--
Stephen has served in the Missouri House for seven years and is currently running for State Senate in the 19th district. During his time in the House, Webber has earned a reputation as a smart, hard-working, and effective legislator in both Democratic and Republican circles. Prior to his election to the legislature, Stephen served in the Marines with distinction and completed two tours in Iraq. He then committed himself to public service by running for the House at age 23.
During this event, Stephen and members of the Jewish Community discussed the need for young professionals to engage in the policy process and raise the level of discourse. While Stephen was candid and insightful on the current political environment in Jefferson City, he expressed confidence that there are opportunities to shape the state's policies around key priorities for the next generation. Our discussion also focused on the variety of ways young professionals can be more politically involved while enhancing their careers. For some, engagement may focus on providing expertise on specific issues, while others may work with organizations whose missions they strongly support.
We want to thank Melissa Merlin for facilitating this discussion and providing lunch. For anyone interested in becoming more involved in the policy process, please do not hesitate to contact David Winton (david@penman-winton.com) or Gerry Greiman (ggreiman@spencerfane.com).
