A bill requiring voters to present photo identification in order to cast their ballot was taken up in the Missouri Senate yesterday. The legislation was debated for several hours and then laid over, though the Senate is expected to take it up again this week.
The photo ID bill, HB 1631, passed the House in January by a 114 to 39 vote. It must be passed by the Senate to move to the Governor's desk. The bill is accompanied by a proposed Constitutional amendment, HJR 53, to allow voter photo ID requirements to be implemented. HJR 53 is also on the Senate calendar for floor debate.
